ALBUQUERQUE – Senior Donnie Graybill recorded a herculean effort on his second day of competition in the heptathlon at the 2010 Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships from the Albuquerque Convention Center, making up five spots on the final day of the meet to finish in fifth place and become Shippensburg's first-ever All-American, either indoor or outdoor, in multis competition.

Graybill began his day with a lifetime personal record of 8.88 seconds in the sprint hurdles that netted nearly 800 points toward his total. His time to shine came in the next event: the pole vault. Graybill was the only heptathlete to clear 16 feet. Earlier this year at the New Balance Games, Graybill became the first SU competitor to clear 16 feet in the pole vault since 1995. On Saturday he repeated the feat, clearing 16 feet, 0 ¾ inches on his second attempt while Bemidji State's Zac Preble failed on each of his three attempts.

Entering the final event, the 1,000-meter run, Graybill held a miniscule four-point advantage over Central Missouri's Brent Vogel and an equally meager 14-point lead over Tiffin's Dan Snyder. In fact, three competitors were within 45 points of Graybill entering the seventh and final event.

Needing a strong performance, Graybill delivered just that. His solid fourth-place time of 2:53.93 caused him to fall back just one slot as a result of Central Missouri's 1-2-3 finish in the event. Overall, Graybill scored 5,072 points, just 20 points off his school-record point total at the 2010 PSAC Championships and a 517-point improvement from his performance at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.

Overall, he is just the eighth indoor All-American in school history and the first since Nate Reider finished fifth in the weight throw in 2007. He is one of just three indoor All-Americans over the last 10 years.

Graybill completed the first four events on Friday in 10th place, just a few points behind Slippery Rock's Brady Wert. The two men are the only two PSAC competitors in the multis competition. Both Graybill and Wert were among the three finalists in the high jump portion of the competition, splitting the top points with current leader Darius Walker of Central Missouri. In the long jump, Graybill had a solid jump of 21 feet, 10 inches that ranked fifth among the competitors.
