SAVANNAH, Ga. --
Junior center fielder Matt Howard and senior left fielder Jacob Oswalt each smacked a home run Sunday, but the power display wasn't enough to carry the Slippery Rock University baseball team to victory at historic Grayson Stadium.

California (Pa.) won a pair of offensive shootouts Sunday, 13-8 and 8-6, to complete a four-game division-schedule-opening sweep of The Rock, the preseason favorite to win the division championship.

The Vulcans (9-5 overall, 4-0 PSAC-West) pounded out 15 hits in Sunday's first game and added 12 hits in the finale.

In the process, they sent The Rock (6-10, 0-4) to its fourth and fifth straight losses.

Overshadowed by the losses were several noteworthy offensive performances by Rock players.

Howard was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in Sunday's first game, while junior first baseman Nick Caito and sophomore left fielder Carter Haponski each had two hits and freshman third baseman Jamison Walck added a double.

Oswalt clobbered a two-run home run in the second game, while Walck was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and junior catcher/first baseman Derek DiRuscia added a double.

Senior right-hander Vince Lloyd was the Game 1 starting and losing pitcher. he allowed 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits, struck out five and walked two in three innings of work.

Freshman southpaw Joby Lapkowicz was the Game 1 starter and loser. He allowed five earned runs on five hits, struck out four and walked four in four innings.

Sunday's losses came less than 24 hours after California scored 8-4 and 8-3 wins in the opening games of the series.

Senior second baseman Billy Messer hit a two-run home run to highlight The Rock attack Saturday.

The Rock is scheduled to return to action Tuesday with a home-schedule-opening 1 p.m. doubleheader against Washington Adventist University at Jack Critchfield Park.

SRU then turns its attention to a four-game series next weekend against division rival Clarion. Friday's games are scheduled to be played in Clarion with Saturday's twinbill slated for Critchfield Park.

Boxscores for the four-game series vs. California will be posted Monday.
