SAVANNAH, Ga. -- California (Pa.) rode complete-game pitching efforts from Nick Schreiber and Randy Sturgill to an 8-4, 8-3 doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock University Satrday afternoon at historic Grayson Stadium in the opening doubleheader of this year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division schedule.
Senior second baseman
Billy Messer smacked a two-run home run in the second game to lead The Rock attack.
Junior center fielder
Matt Howard had two hits in each game, while freshman third baseman
Jamison Walck had a pair of hits in the second game.
Junior right-hander
George Hebert was the Game 1 starting and losing pitcher for The Rock and threw a complete game. He struck out three, walked five and allowed eight earned runs on nine hits and was handed his first loss in three decisions this spring.
Sophomore southpaw Zack Jeney was the Game 2 starter for The Rock and suffered the loss after he allowed three earned runs on two hits and walked one in two-thirds of an inning.
The Rock (6-8 overall, 0-2 PSAC-West) and Vulcans (7-5, 2-0) conclude their four-game season series with a 10 a.m. twinbill Sunday.
SRU then turns its attention to Tuesday's scheduled home-schedule-opening non-conference doubleheader vs. Washington Adventist University at Jack Critchfield Park.
