Strong second half sends Rock to first conference win

Amy Halls and Casey Quinn each scored five goals and SRU netted 10 second half goals to record a 16-11 win over Edinboro in PSAC-West action Monday evening

EDINBORO, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team outscored Edinboro 10-5 in the second half to pick up a 16-11 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action Monday at Sox Harrison Stadium.

Monday's win marked the first division win for Slippery Rock since the program was returned to the NCAA Division II level in 2007.

The Rock's 4-1 start is the best for the program since the 1989 team opened the season 8-1 before finishing the year 8-2.

Edinboro scored the first two goals of the game before SRU got on the board with the next two goals to even the score at 2-2 with 18:19 left in the first half. The teams traded goals through the rest of the period to send the game to intermission tied at 6-6.

Casey Quinn opened the second half with a goal for SRU in the third minute, but Edinboro battled back with the next two goals to regain the lead 8-7.

The Rock responded with a four-goal run, keyed by two goals from Amy Halls to open up an 11-8 lead.

Edinboro scored three more times, but Slippery Rock matched each goal and closed the game with the final three goals, including an empty netter by Quinn, to seal the 16-11 win.

Quinn and Halls each finished the game with five goals and two ground balls, while Quinn also added an assist.

Alexis Slutsky scored two goals and handed out one assist, and Katie Roof also found the back of the net twice.

Emma VanDenburg and Samantha Eddy each scored once and Ariel Knox added an assist to round out the scorers for SRU. Eddy finished with a team-high four draw controls and also had two caused turnovers. VanDenburg and Olivia Lampenfeld each tallied three caused turnovers and Brianne Dishong picked up seven ground balls to lead the defensive effort.

Ashley Winkelspecht earned the win in goal after allowing 11 goals and recording 15 saves.

Edinboro was led by Rebecca Zajac with four goals and two assists. Abbey Mackessy and Lauren Kincaid each scored twice.

Julie McAvoy was credited with the loss in goal, allowing 15 goals and recording eight saves.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 35-30 in total shots, 30-26 in ground balls and 15-14 in draw controls. SRU converted on 12-of-17 clear attempts, while Edinboro cleared successfully on 9-of-11 attempts.

With the win, SRU improves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in division play. Edinboro drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC-West.

The Rock returns home to host PSAC-West division leader No. 5 Mercyhurst Thursday. First draw is set for 7 p.m. at Thompson Stadium.


Note: Halls' five goals bring her career tally to 80, moving her into sole possession of third-place on the career scoring ledger at SRU.
