Rock netters nips W. Va. Wesleyan, 5-4, in battle of ranked teams

Chelsea Gibson's three-set win in the No. 4 singles match secured the victory for the 39th-ranked Rock (10-3)

WEXFORD, Pa. -- Junior Chelsea Gibson's three-set win in the No. 4 singles matches Sunday night was the winning point as the 39th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team nipped visiting West Virginia Wesleyan in a battle of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region ranked teams at the Oxford North Tennis Center.

With the team score knotted at 4-4, Gibson won the final match of the night by a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3) score to give SRU, the No. 3 team in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional ranking, its 10th win in 13 matches this season.

Gibson won the decisive third set after trailing by a 4-2 score.

West Virginia Wesleyan, the No. 4-ranked team in the region, lost for only the fourth time in 17 matches.

Sophomore Sarah Lynch had a hand in two Rock team points as she won her No. 2 singles match and teammed with freshman Janelle Krantz to win the No. 3 doubles duel.

Seniors Laura Handy and Jessica Hilborn won the No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches, respectively, to account for the other Rock team points.

The Rock returns to the courts Tuesday for a 4 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference interdivisional match at Shippensburg.

SRU's next home match is scheduled for April 6 against Allegheny College (4 p.m. start).
