SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University softball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division play with a doubleheader split of California (Pa.) on Tuesday. The Rock took the opening game 3-1 and fell 4-0 in the second.

The win give Slippery Rock a 11-8 overall record and a 1-1 record in the PSAC-West. The win also gives head coach Vashion Johnson the all-time wins record at SRU with 140. His feat surpasses SRU hall of famer, Jan Kanevich.

Junior Shauna Walker picked up the win pitching a complete game. Walker allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked one. Her counterpart for California, Maria Greco, allowed three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.

Both teams were scoreless for the first three and a half innings when SRU found their offense. Jordan Zeunges started the inning by nailing a single to the shortstop. Jessica Kortz continued the hitting with a single to center field. After Kortz and Jenna Geibel picked up the first and second outs of the inning, Sheree Horvath singled to right field to score Zeunges and give SRU the 1-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning for The Rock, the Vulcans answered back allowing only one hit with no runs in the fifth. The fate would be the same for the Vulcans in the top of the sixth.

After Kortz reached base on an error by Jillian Russell, Geibel crushed a homerun off the scoreboard in left field to score two and give The Rock a 3-0 lead.

California would rally in the top of the seventh, scoring a run after a Kayleigh Braim RBI scored Danielle Easton. Julia Mueller would strike out looking to end the game and give SRU their first conference win of the season, 3-1.

In the second game, Lindsey Grace took the mount for The Rock and Lauren Shaheen pitched for the Vulcans.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first three innings, until Russell nailed her first homerun of the game in to center field. After Alyson Johnson was stranded on base, the Vulcans held a 1-0 lead.

SRU could not answer in the bottom of the fourth going 1-2-3 to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Daley connected with a shot to right field past Natalie Atkinson to record an in the park homerun. California could not answer with any other runs in the fifth, to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

After Geibel was left on second base in the bottom of the fifth, Shaylee Ianno came in to pitch for The Rock. Ianno would have a short stay as Russell picked up her second homer of the game after two pitches. Grace re-entered the game, to give a homerun up on the next batter, Johnson.

Amy Erickson came in to finish the inning, which ended in the next three batters. California was up 4-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Leah Brickner connected on a single to the pitcher, and Shardea Croes singled to left field. Those two would be left on base, and the inning would end with the score still 4-0.

California would not score any other runs in the top of the seventh, with a shot for SRU to come back. Horvath reached on an error by the third base player, when the next two players could not reach base, to end the game 4-0.

Both Geibel and Croes went 2-6 for the day, with Geibel recording two RBIs.

SRU will continue with a grueling schedule Wednesday when The Rock host Gannon in a PSAC-West doubleheader at the SRU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Rock will play 24 games in 17 day to finish out the season, with the next three games being played at the SRU Softball Complex.
