Rock falls to #2 Lock Haven, 23-3

The Rock women's lacrosse team dropped a 23-3 decision Tuesday against No. 2 Lock Haven in a PSAC-West matchup at Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The No. 2-ranked Lock Haven University women's lacrosse team scored the final 13 goals en route to defeating Slippery Rock 23-3 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Tuesday at Thompson Stadium.

Lock Haven (7-0, 4-0 PSAC), runner-up in the nation last season and ranked second in each poll of the current season, got out to a two goal lead before Slippery Rock (4-4, 1-3 PSAC) got on the board when Ariel Knox converted on an assist from Emma VanDenburg in the fifth minute to cut the deficit to one.

The Lady Eagles responded with two more goals to take a 4-1 lead before Knox scored her second of the game, this time off an assist from Samantha Eddy to cut the lead to 4-2 with 22:14 to play in the first half.

Lock Haven responded by scoring the next six goals to break open a 10-2 game. Amy Halls scored for SRU with 11 minutes to play, but the Lady Eagles answered right back with five more goals to send the game to halftime leading 15-3.

LHU kept its foot on the gas in the second half, scoring eight more goals and holding SRU off the scoreboard.

For the game, Lock Haven finished with advantages of 40-19 in total shots and 27-14 in ground balls. Each team was even with 14 draw controls, while the Lady Eagles cleared successfully on a perfect 18-of-18 attempts. The Rock cleared successfully on 9-of-15 attempts.

Halls finished the game with one goal on seven shots, while also picking up two draw controls and one caused turnover. Casey Quinn finished with a game-high five draw controls and Candice Mack led the team with five ground balls. VanDenburg joined in the defensive effort with three caused turnovers.

Ashley Winkelspecht took the loss in goal for SRU, allowing 23 goals and recording 11 saves.

Lock Haven was led by a 10-point effort from Kayleigh Johnson, who scored two goals and handed out eight assists. Leigh Titus, an early-season candidate for National Player of the Year honors, finished with four goals and three assists. Alexandra Cross and Allison Berger each scored three times for the Lady Eagles.

Kira Nuttall was credited with the win after allowing three goals and recording seven saves in the first half. Nicole Necci played the first 19:39 of the second half, allowing no goals and recording two saves. Heather Sacko played the final 10:21 and did not face a shot.

Slippery Rock will continue conference play against another nationally-ranked team Thursday, traveling to No. 9 Gannon. Game time was originally set for 7 p.m., but has been moved up to 5 p.m.
