SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University baseball team suffered its third and fourth straight losses Friday night as visiting Indiana (Pa.) swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park by scores of 10-9 (10 innings) and 6-3.

As a result of Friday's action, The Rock will take a 13-15 overall record and 7-7 (fifth place) PSAC-West mark into Saturday's 1 p.m. twinbill at Owen Dougherty Stadium in Indiana, which will close out the teams' four-game season series.

Indiana (11-16 overall, 6-2 PSAC-West) outhit The Rock by a 15-9 margin in Friday's first game, while both teams collected eight hits in the nightcap.

Rock sophomore left fielder Carter Haponski had five hits in the twinbill, capped off by a 4-for-4 effort in the second game, when he had a double and a triple. Haponski also scored four runs and picked up one RBI in the doubleheader.

Junior shortstop Adam Jury had two hits in each game to complement Haponski's effort. He also collected five RBIs, four of which came in the first game, when he also had a double.

Junior southpaw Zach Jeney (2-2) was tagged with the loss in the first game after he allowed two earned runs on six hits, struck out five, walked two and hit two batters in the final five innings.

Rock Game 1 starting pitcher George Hebert yielded eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, struck out three and walked three in the first five frames.

The Rock fell behind by a 5-0 score in the first two and a half innings of Friday's first game before it scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the third to trim the deficit to one, 5-4.

Jury's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth put SRU on top by a 6-5 score, but Indiana came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 8-7.

Each team scored a run in its next at bat to set the score at 9-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when Jury doubled home one run and junior right fielder Mitchell Monas plated the tying run with a sacrifice fly.

Vern Powell broke the 9-9 deadlock with a two-out double down the left field line in the top of the 10th for the Crimson Hawks.

Indiana came right back in the top of the first inning of the second game to plate a run and take the early lead, but SRU answered with two tallies in the bottom of the first, keyed by a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Billy Messer and an RBI single by freshman third baseman Jamison Walck.

The 2-1 Rock lead stood until the top of the third, when IUP scored a run to tie the score at 2-2.

A leadoff triple by Haponski, followed two batters later by an RBI single by Jury, put The Rock back on top. 3-2.

Indiana retied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth and then won the game with three tallies in the top of the seventh. Paul Bingham led off the inning with a triple and scored what proved to be the winning run on a squeeze-bunt single by T.J. Nichols before the final two runs of the game came across on bases-loaded walks issued by Rock relief pitcher Justin Thomas.

Freshman southpaw Joby Lapkowicz (1-3) was SRU's Game 2 starting and losing pitcher. He allowed all six IUP runs (five earned) on eight hits, struck out eight, walked five and hit one batter in the first six innings.

Thomas walked three of the six batters he faced in the final inning.
