Rock drops a pair at Mercyhurst, 5-4 and 7-0

The Rock (15-12 overall, 3-3 PSAC-West) dropped a pair of game to Mercyhurst, 5-4 and 7-0 on Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division play.

ERIE, Pa.—For the second straight day, the Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of games, 5-4 and 7-0 against Mercyhurst on Saturday. With the losses The Rock drops to 15-12 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division. 

Mercyhurst (17-17 overall 4-4 PSAC-West) rebounded with two wins after losing a double-header to Edinboro on Friday. 

In the first game, Shauna Walker kept SRU in the game pitching in 4.1 innings allowing seven hits, three runs and four strike outs. 

The Rock started the offense early with two runs in the first inning. Both Jenna Geibel and Natalie Atkinson recorded RBIs to give SRU the 2-0 lead early. 

Both teams were scoreless until the Lakers recorded four hits and three runs in the bottom of the third to take the 3-2 lead. 

Sheree Horvath tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun. In the next inning Atkinson doubled to left field then scored on the throw from a Whitney Warmus single up the middle. 

Mercyhurst responded in the bottom of the seventh when an error by Shardea Croes scored Andrea Saunders and Emily Redig scored the winning run from a bunt by Megan Houston. 

Amanda Norman picked up the win in the first game pitching seven innings with eight hits, four runs and four strikeouts. 

In the second game, Lindsey Grace pitched in four innings allowing 11 hits and five earned runs. The Rock committed three errors and recorded a hit from Croes, Geibel and Rachel Henderson

The Rock returns to action on Monday at Edinboro for another PSAC-West matchup. First pitch is set for 2:30 in the double-header. 

The following day SRU will host Lake Erie College back at the SRU Softball Complex.
