Geibel’s home run gives Rock the split with Edinboro

Freshman third baseman Jenna Geibel nailed a solo home run to lead The Rock to a 2-1 win over Edinboro on Monday afternoon in the first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division double header.

EDINBORO, Pa.—Freshman third baseman Jenna Geibel nailed a solo home run to lead The Rock to a 2-1 win over Edinboro on Monday afternoon in the first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division double header. 

The Rock (16-13, 4-4 PSAC-West) snapped a four-game losing streak by winning the first game against the Fighting Scots (13-12, 5-5 PSAC-West) who won the second game 10-2. 

Geibel went 1-3 in the first game with her seventh home run of the season. Shardea Croes went 2-4 with an RBI. 

Shaylee Ianno picked up the win pitching in four innings allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out three and walking another three. Shauna Walker picked up her first save of the season tossing in the final three innings, allowing two hits and struck out two. 

Each team was held scoreless until Geibel's homer to left center in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Jordan Zeunges reached base on a fielder's choice then stole second to get in scoring position. Croes nailed a shot up the middle scoring Zeunges for a 2-0 Rock lead. 

The Fighting Scots would answer back in the bottom of the fifth with a Aimee Sisson put out to second scoring Carrie Hall and putting life back in the home team with a 2-1 score. 

Edinboro could not capitalize on a Jessica VanDamia double in the bottom of the seventh, to give The Rock the 2-1 win. 

In the second game, Amy Erickson would give up two runs in two-thirds of the bottom of the first inning with three hits while facing five batters. 

Lindsey Grace finished the inning and another inning and one third striking out one with two earned runs. Walker would finish up the game allowing nine hits with three earned runs and striking out one. 

Geibel continued her strong showing with a double to right field in the top of the fourth until Sheree Horvath lined into a double play. Natalie Atkinson would double to center field setting up a home run by Kirsten Brant. The Fighting Scots would still be ahead 6-2. 

Edinboro scored four runs in the final two innings to pick up the win. 

Brant and Atkinson both went 2-3 in the second game with Brant recording two RBIs. 

The Rock returns to action on Tuesday with a home twinbill against Lake Erie College at the SRU Softball Complex with a 3 p.m. start. 

SRU will return to PSAC-West play on Friday when they host the Fighting Scots at the Softball Complex.
