Rock sweeps Lake Erie 10-8 and 8-0

Jessica Kortz picked up her 11th and 12th home runs of the season in a 10-8 and 8-0 sweep of Lake Erie College on Tuesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University softball team picked up a pair of wins against Lake Erie College Tuesday, recording double-digit hits in the 10-8 and 8-0 wins at the SRU Softball Complex. 

With the sweep, The Rock improves to 18-13 overall and holds a 4-4 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division. Lake Erie drops to 6-24 this season. 

Jessica Kortz went 4-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored in the first game. Kirsten Brant went 3-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the afternoon. 

In the first game, Shauna Walker picked up her ninth win of the season pitching in two innings allowing five hits and five earned runs while striking out four and walking one. Shaylee Ianno came in after a productive first inning for the storm, pitching in five innings allowing eight hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks. 

The Storm recorded four runs on four hits in the first inning with a Danielle Finkler grand slam to right center field. 

The Rock answered back in the bottom of the inning with a Jenna Geibel two-run home run to center field to score Kortz as the lead was cut in half, 4-2. 

Lake Erie would keep the offensive attack moving with a Erica Tanski single and 2 run RBI to pull the lead back to four for the visitors, 6-2 in the second. 

The Rock loaded the bases in the bottom of the second when Kortz singled to left field scoring Jordan Zeunges and Ianno to chop at the lead, 6-4. 

After Brant was walked in the bottom of the third, Sheree Horvath doubled to left field to score Brant on the throw home and put SRU down by only one with a 6-5 score. 

After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth for the Storm, SRU capitalized with Kortz's first homer of the game, scoring Zeunges in the process and putting the home team up 7-6. 

The Storm would respond in the top of the sixth when Lindsey Pennell singled down the third base line to bring in a run and tie the game 7-7. 

Zeunges started the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right field, and would later score as Shardea Croes singled to second base. Kortz would continue her hot streak nailing a two-run homer to center field for her second home run of the game and giving The Rock the 10-7 lead. 

Lake Erie would score another run in the seventh but it would not be enough to take game one, 10-8. 

Lindsey Grace would pick up her sixth win of the season in the second game, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in five innings. 

The Rock would be dominate from the start with two runs in the first inning coming from a Geibel single to left center and a Brant single to left field. 

After two consecutive 1-2-3 innings for Lake Erie and a runner left on base in the third, The Rock scored three runs on five hits in the bottom of the third headlined by a Stephanie Collenette double to left field scoring two-runs in the process. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Horvath picked up an RBI single to the shortstop scoring Croes from second base. In the bottom of the fifth, Croes would score Zeunges and Kendra Kutz to give The Rock the 8-0 lead and the sweep. 

SRU recorded 13 hits to one error in the first game, and 12 hits to one error in the second game. Kortz has 12 home runs this season, which ties her for second place for home runs in a single season with her total in 2007. 

The Rock is back in action on Thursday, hosting Point Park in a non-conference doubleheader. The games are set to start at 3 p.m.
