Second half run leads Indiana over Rock, 13-9

IUP outscored Slippery Rock 8-1 in the second half for a comeback 13-9 win over The Rock in a PSAC-West match Tuesday night.

INDIANA, Pa.
– The Indiana (Pa.) women's lacrosse team rallied back from a three-goal halftime deficit to defeat Slippery Rock 13-9 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division match Tuesday night at Miller Stadium.

Indiana (5-6, 3-3 PSAC) trailed 8-5 at halftime but scored seven unanswered goals to open the second half, outscoring Slippery Rock (4-6, 1-5 PSAC) 8-1 in the second stanza to seal the win.

The Rock jumped out to a 5-1 lead early and held a 7-3 lead with 13:21 to play in the first half before IUP scored twice to cut the lead to 7-5. Casey Quinn scored with 4:57 to play to give SRU the 8-5 lead at the intermission.

Indiana took advantage of a 7-3 edge in draw controls in the second half and scored four goals in less than 10 minutes to take its first lead of the game, 9-8 with 18:52 to play. The Crimson Hawks added a goal with just under 14 minutes to play and then put the game out of reach with two goals in a span of 11 seconds with just over seven minutes to play.

Amy Halls scored for SRU with 2:06 to play, snapping a scoreless stretch of 32:51, but IUP controlled possession over the final two minutes and added one final goal to cap the game.

Halls led Slippery Rock with three goals and one assist, while Quinn and Emma VanDenburg each scored two goals and added one assist. Katie Roof scored once and assisted one goal and Ariel Knox scored one goal to cap the scoring.

Brianne Dishong had a team-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the defensive effort.

Ashley Winkelspecht took the loss in goal, allowing 13 goals and recording 12 saves.

IUP was led by a five-point effort from Becca Vogt with three goals and two assists. Sarah DeMaio also scored three goals and Stephanie Bianco added two goals.

Kaitlin Sterling earned the win in goal, allowing nine goals and recording 14 saves, including eight in the second half.

IUP finished the game with a 31-30 advantage in total shots after trailing 18-12 at halftime. The Rock finished with a 24-23 edge in ground balls, but draw controls proved to be a deciding factor in the game. Indiana finished with a 14-10 advantage on the draw, including a 7-3 edge in the second half. IUP cleared successfully on 15-of-18 attempts and SRU cleared the zone 16-of-20 times.

The Rock returns home to Thompson Stadium Thursday to host Lake Erie in a non-conference match. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
