SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Former Slippery Rock University men's basketball standout
Denell Stephens was the star of the show April 6 at the Diekirch Basket Ball League All-Star Game in Luxembourg.
Stephens scored 21 points to earn the game's MVP honor and also won the slam dunk contest held during the halftime intermission on the home court of his professional team, T-71 Dudelange.
According to a story posted on the web site
eurobasket.com: "In the halftime break of the game, Stephens showed his unbelievable athletic abilities and he won the dunking contest after having three amazing dunks. He showed the crowd, that he is by far the most spectacular player in the league."
Stephens is currently averaging 14.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for T-71 Dudelange, the No. 2 team in the Diekirch League.
Prior to signing a professional contract, Stephens played one season at SRU. He earned honorable mention Basketball Digest All-America, first-team National Association of Basketball Coaches all-region and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division "Player of the Year" honors in 2008-09.
A 6-foot-4, 215-pound Brooklyn. N.Y. resident and graduate of Elkton High School in Maryland, Stephens was SRU's leading scorer and rebounder with per game averages of 20.0 points and 9.6 rebounds. He ranked second in the PSAC in rebounding and fourth in scoring.
He also led the conference in offensive rebounds at 3.8 per game, had the fourth-best field goal percentage in the league at 57.5% and ranked fifth in steals at 2.0 per game.
Behind his lead, The Rock compiled a 21-8 final record overall and claimed a second-place finish in the PSAC-West final standings, as well as berth in the conference semifinals for the first time since 2000.
