Rock falls to Edinboro

The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Edinboro on Sunday. The Rock fell 6-2 in nine innings in the first game and 8-2 in the second.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Edinboro on Sunday. The Rock fell 6-2 in nine innings in the first game and 8-2 in the second. 

The losses drop SRU's overall record to 19-16 and 4-6 in the PSAC-West. Edinboro improves to 17-12 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC-West. 

In the first game both teams were scoreless going in to the top of the fifth Brittany Price advanced to second base off of a Shardea Croes error in center field scored Carrie Hall from second. 

The Rock would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Jenna Geibel singled to center field scoring Croes and tying the game 1-1. 

Extra innings would be required when both teams failed to score in the seventh inning. 

After two errors on Whitney Warmus in the top of the ninth, Edinboro would score five runs including a three-run home run by Amiee Sisson to put the visitors up 6-1. 

Sheree Horvath would get SRU on the right track in the bottom of the ninth with a home run to left field, but the next three batters could not take control ending the game with a 6-2 loss. 

Shaylee Ianno picked up the loss pitching in nine innings with eight hits, nine strikeouts and two walks. Ianno did not give up an earned run in the game. 

In the second game, Edinboro would pick up three runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. 

Staying on track the Fighting Scots would score another run from a Ashley Black home run to left field putting them up 4-0 early. 

The Rock answered back with two runs of their own courtesy of a Jessica Kortz single and a Geibel sacrifice fly. The lead was cut in half, 4-2. 

Edinboro would score three runs in the next two innings including Price's second home run of the day. In the top of the seventh Black picked up her second homer of the game to score the final run for the Fighting Scots and clinching the sweep, 8-2. 

Shauna Walker picked up the loss in the second game pitching in two innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs with one walk. 

The Rock will go on a two-game road trip starting on Monday. Monday's doubleheader at Salem International will start at 3 p.m. and SRU will travel to Gannon on Tuesday for a PSAC-West doubleheader.
