Rock's Handy earns PSAC-West women's tennis weekly honor

Senior Laura Handy compiled a 10-0 combined record last week to lead the 44th-ranked Rock to five victories

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University senior Laura Handy was named Monday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division women's tennis "Athlete of the Week".

Handy, a native of Pittsburgh and graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, was unbeaten in 10 matches last week, five in No. 1 singles competition and five in No. 1 doubles competition, to lead SRU to a 5-0 week.

She won the singles matches by an average score of 6-2, 6-2 and, along with sophomore partner Dunja Drmac, reigned by an average score of 8-2 in doubles matches against three PSAC-West foes (Clarion, Shippensburg and Indiana) and two teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division II Atlantic Regional poll (#7 Charleston and #10 Indiana).

Handy won one singles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score and two by 6-1, 6-1 scores and also won two doubles matches by 8-1 scores and one by an 8-2 score. She led The Rock to two 9-0 wins (Clarion and Allegheny), a 5-0 win over Shippensburg, an 8-1 win over Indiana and a 7-2 win over Charleston.

Handy and the 44th-ranked Rock return to the courts Tuesday, when they will visit eighth-ranked California in a PSAC-Western Division match. The winner of that match will claim the PSAC-West championship and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's match, The Rock will appear in the PSAC playoffs for the fifth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 seasons. The playoffs begin April 20.

Between Tuesday's match at California and the start of the PSAC playoffs, SRU will conclude its regular-season schedule with a 1:30 p.m. match Thursday vs. West Virginia State, the No. 7-ranked team in the regional poll.
