Rock rolls to 17th victory, 8-1 over West Virginia State

Thursday's win gave the 44th-ranked Rock a 17-4 record heading into postseason play

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The 44th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team closed out its regular-season schedule Thursday with an 8-1 win over visiting West Virginia State in a battle of regionally-ranked teams.

SRU, the No. 3 team in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Atlantic Regional poll, improved its season record to 17-4 with the win.

West Virginia State, the No. 7 team in the Atlantic Regional rankings, saw its season record fall to 13-6.

Thursday's match was the fourth straight The Rock played against teams currently ranked among the top 10 in the region. SRU beat co-No. 10 Indiana (Pa.) and No. 4 Charleston (W. Va.) last Saturday and Sunday, respectively, before it lost to No. 1 California (Pa.) Wednesday.

SRU is 7-2 against the top 10 teams in the region with wins also over No. 5 West Virginia Wesleyan, No. 6 Kutztown, No. 8 Mercyhurst and co-No. 10 Shaw (N.C.). The only regional rivals to beat SRU this season are California and Bloomsburg, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the regional poll.

SRU potentially could get a rematch with both California and Bloomsburg as part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships next week.

The Rock, which earned PSAC-Western Division runner-up honors, will host PSAC-West third seed Mercyhurst in a first-round playoff match Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on the SRU outdoor courts.

The winner of that match will advance to a semifinal match against Bloomsburg, the PSAC-East champion, on the Huskies' home courts next Friday, April 24.

California, the PSAC-West champion, has a first-round bye and will meet either PSAC-East No. 2 Kutztown or PSAC-East No. 3 West Chester in the other semifinal next Friday.

The semifinal winners will duel April 25 in the conference championship match.

The Rock will be competing in the PSAC Championships for the fifth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 seasons.

Thursday, The Rock won two of the three doubles matches before it swept up all six singles victories.

Leading the way for SRU were sophomore Dunja Drmac (No. 3) and senior Jessica Hilborn (No. 5), who each recorded "double-bagel," 6-0, 6-0 wins in their singles matches.
