INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team was led by impressive performances from its throwers Saturday at the Ed Fry Invitational hosted by Indiana (Pa.) University.
The Rock throwers picked up wins in two events and posted NCAA provisional qualifiers in two events to lead the team's effort.
Chis Warning led the way, winning the discus with a provisional qualifier of 49.90 meters. Warning then placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.57m.
Nick Kennedy landed a big personal best in the javelin, placing second with a provisional qualifier of 59.32 meters.
Joel Peters was dominant in the hammer throw, topping the field by nearly four meters with a winning throw of 51.54 meters.
The Rock mid-distance crew was impressive as well, sweeping the top-three positions in the 800-meter run.
Freshman
Kevin Jewel won the race in 1:55.47, followed by
Phil Rector in second at 1:56.71 and
Jason Jamieson in third at 1:57.17. A total of 41 runners competed in the event.
Joining the mid-distance runners Saturday was
Ethan Isoldi and
Kevin Dustin in the 1,500-meter run. Isoldi placed second in 4:08.87, followed by Dustin in third at 4:10.77.
Matt Antis tied for the win in pole vault with a clearance of 3.96 meters.
Ethan Geisler picked up a pair of top-five finishes to lead the hurdlers, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.77 seconds and finishing fifth in the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.86 seconds.
James Sims led the sprinting crew with a pair of top-five finishes, placing third in the 400-meter dash in 50.90 seconds and picking up a fifth-place finish in the 200m in 22.95 seconds.
Sims and Geisler were joined by
Mason McLaughlin and
Dan Henry to place fifth in the 4x100-meter relay, posting a time of 43.82 seconds.
Rogers Clements led the distance runners with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:32.00.
Shawn Vanderbrook capped the top performances on the day with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, landing a leap of 6.24 meters.
The Rock will send select athletes to the elite Penn Relays from April 22-24 in Philadelphia, while other members of the team will split between meets at Ashland and Baldwin-Wallace April 24.
