Rock swept by California (Pa.), 8-4 and 9-0

The Rock closes out the season with a 22-21 overall record and a 5-11 record in the PSAC-West.

CALIFORNIA, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped two games to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division top seed California on Tuesday afternoon. The Vulcans took the first game 8-4 and the second 9-0 in five innings. 

In the first game Lindsey Grace pitched in five innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs with a strikeout and a walk. Her counterpart, Lauren Shaheen recorded her 17th win of the season in six innings with four hits and one earned run. Shaheen struck out eight while walking one. 

California started the game with a Danielle Easton RBI sacrifice fly to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. 

The Rock would respond in the top of the third when Jessica Kortz connected with a single down the right field line, scoring Kirsten Brant and tying the game 1-1. 

The Vulcans would take that momentum in to the bottom of the third with Easton reaching base on an error scoring Kayleigh Braim from second. Alyson Johnson singled to score Easton and put the Vulcans back on top 3-1. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Johnson would pick up her second RBI of the game reaching base on an error to score Easton would doubled earlier in the inning. Amanda Wallace would double down the left field line to score both Julie Mackenzie and Johnson giving the Vulcans the 6-1 lead. 

Amy Erickson would replace Grace in the bottom of the sixth. Laurel Marshalek would triple to center field to score two runs in to put the home team ahead 8-1. 

The Rock would pick up the offense in the top of the seventh when Natalie Atkinson doubled scoring three runs in with two outs in the inning. Kortz had the opportunity to continue the inning, but grounded out to the pitcher, ending the game 8-4. 

In the second game, the Vulcans scored at least one run in each inning including five runs in the bottom of the third. 

Shauna Walker pitched in four innings with 11 hits and nine earned runs. Walker also struck out two and allowed one walk. Maria Greco picked up her 11th win on the season pitching a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk. 

Brittany Jones was the lone walk in the game in the top of the third. Jordan Zeunges later reached base on a fielder's choice, with Jones getting caught at second. Zeunges would later advance to second but be left on base. 

Julia Mueller would connect on a home run in the bottom of a third scoring Kristen McKenzie after she picked up an RBI with a double to right field. 

The Rock closes out the season with a 22-21 overall record and a 5-11 record in the PSAC-West. California closes out their regular season with a 30-9 record and a 15-1 record in the PSAC-West. 

SRU is the only team to defeat the Vulcans this season in PSAC-West play. The two teams split a doubleheader on March 30. The Rock took game one 3-1 and lost game two 4-0. 

Note: Atkinson recorded her 12th double of the season, moving her in to third on the single-season doubles list. Sheree Horvath also joined the list this season. Her 13 doubles is good for second place on the single-season record list. Jenna Geibel finished the season with 96 total bases which ties her with Kortz's mark in 2007 for second on the single season list.
