BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The 44th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship match with a 5-2 win in semifinal action Friday afternoon over Bloomsburg on the Huskies' home court.
The win was the third straight for The Rock, who improved their season record to 19-4, and moved the Green and White into Saturday's 9 a.m. title match against eighth-ranked California (Pa.).
California blanked Kutztown 5-0 in the other semifinal match Friday.
Saturday's title-match appearance will be SRU's second in the last three seasons. The Rock lost a 5-0 decision to California in 2008.
SRU seeks its first conference championship since 2003, when the Green and White won a 5-2 decision over Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg beat The Rock in semifinal matches in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Friday's win also avenged a 5-4 loss at Bloomsburg earlier this season and may have earned The Rock a host role for first- and second-round matches in the NCAA Division II tournament that starts May 6.
SRU was ranked third behind California and Bloomsburg in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings. The top two teams in the final regional poll of the season will host the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament.
