Rock quintet earns All-PSAC-West honors

Matt Howard, Billy Messer and Jake Oswalt were all named to first-team honors while George Hebert and Adam Jury garnered second-team status

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Five members of the Slippery Rock University baseball team were named to All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division honors Tuesday in balloting by the division's head coaches.

Junior center fielder Matt Howard, senior second baseman Billy Messer and senior designated hitter Jacob Oswalt each earned a first-team honor, while junior starting pitcher George Hebert and junior shortstop Adam Jury were afforded second-team status.

The first-team honor was the second in as many seasons for Messer, who was a second-team All-PSAC-West performer in 2008. Oswalt earned his initial first-team all-conference honor this spring after being a second-team selection last spring. Hebert, Howard and Jury each received All-PSAC-West honors for the first time in their collegiate career.

By virtue of their all-conference honors, the quintet is eligible for American Baseball Coaches Association and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association all-region and All-America honors.

Howard, a native of Philadelphia and graduate of LaSalle College High School, finished the season as The Rock's second leading hitter with a .395 average. He led the team in runs scored (60), triples (8) and stolen bases (17 of 20) and also had nine doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs to his credit. He joined The Rock program after playing one season each at Marist College and Frederick Junior College.

Messer, the youngest son of Rock head coach Jeff Messer, is a Slippery Rock High School graduate. He finished the 2010 season as SRU's third leading hitter with a .373 average and was second on the team in doubles (17). A fourth-year member of The Rock program, he also had two triples, two home runs and 34 RBIs in his final collegiate campaign. Last spring, in addition to his All-PSAC-West honor, Messer was named as a second-team all-region performer by the ABCA and earned an honorable mention NCBWA all-region citation.

Oswalt, a fourth-year member of The Rock program who hails from South Fork and is a graduate of Forest Hills High School, batted .269 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 27 RBIs in his final collegiate campaign. In addition to his all-conference honor last spring, Oswalt earned honorable mention NCBWA all-region status

Hebert, a native of Midlothian, Va., and graduate of Clover Hill High School, led The Rock in wins this spring with a 7-1 record and was third on the team in earned run average at 4.03. He struck out 46 and walked 29 in 67 innings. Opposing hitters had a .231 batting average against The Rock right-hander.

Jury, a native of Bigler and graduate of Clearfield High School, tied for the team lead in RBIs with 41 and batted .320 with 10 doubles, one triple and three home runs.

The five all-conference performers led the 2010 Rock team to a 27-23 overall record, a tie for third place in the PSAC tournament and a fourth-place finish in PSAC-West competition.

Hebert, Howard and Jury are among seven everyday players and four starting pitchers slated to return to The Rock lineup for the 2011 season.
