SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Slippery Rock University's
Laura Handy was named Wednesday as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division II Atlantic Regional women's tennis "Senior Player of the Year" award winner.
The honor comes on the heels of Handy, a native of Pittsburgh and graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, being named last week as an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division performer for the third consecutive season.
Handy currently owns an 18-7 record this season as The Rock's No. 1 singles player and is 20-8 in doubles competition. She and doubles partner
Dunja Drmac are 19-5 as SRU's No. 1 doubles tandem.
In four seasons at SRU. Handy has compiled a 164-57 career record, which ranks as the third highest win total in school history.
This season, Handy has led The Rock to a 19-5 overall record, a No. 44 national ranking by the ITA, runner-up honors in both the PSAC-West regular-season and PSAC tournament competitions and a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Rock, which is making its fifth straight appearance in NCAA competition, will host the five-team Atlantic 2 regional Thursday through Saturday on the SRU outdoor courts. The Green and White are the No. 1 seed in the tournament and await the winner of Thursday's opening-round match between Indiana (Pa.) and Shaw (N.C.).
SRU takes on the Indiana-Shaw winner in a 3 p.m. match Friday. Second-seeded Bloomsburg and No. 3 West Virginia Wesleyan duel at noon in the other semifinal match.
The winners of Friday's matches return at noon Saturday for the regional championship match. The winner of that match will advance to the national Round of 16 competition the following week in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
