SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
Joel Peters set a new school record in the hammer throw to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track and field team at the SRU Qualifier Friday evening at the Bill Lennox Track.

Peters landed a throw of 57.53 meters (188'9”) to break the previous school record of 185'10”, set by Mike Hernandez in 2000. His throw placed him second in the event, only to one unattached athlete, and is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Peters was joined in the hammer by Chris Warning, who also performed his best of the season in the event, reaching an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a throw of 55.13 meters to place third.

Warning continued his streak of dominance in the discus, winning the event with a throw of 51.36 meters. He also placed third in the shot put with a season-best throw of 13.70m.

Brady Wert won the high jump with a clearance of 1.95 meters and Jimmy Schneider placed in a tie for second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.55m.

The track athletes were led by a trio of outstanding performances from the 800-meter runners, led by freshman Kevin Jewel. Jewel won the event in a time of 1:52.10, just 0.10 seconds off his season best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Phil Rector followed in second-place with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifier of 1:52.68. Jason Jamieson placed third in 1:53.66, just off the provisional standard of 1:53.00.

The Rock picked up wins in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes from its sprinters, with Mason McLaughlin winning the 200m in 22.86 seconds and James Sims winning the 400m in 48.94 seconds.

Kevin Dustin took the top honor in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the line in 4:04.46, while Ethan Isoldi placed second in 4:05.01.

The Rock hurdlers swept both the short and long hurdles, with Dan Hedglin claiming the title in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.49 seconds and Ethan Geisler winning the 400m hurdles in 54.60 seconds. Michael Dicocco placed second in the 400m hurdles in 55.44 seconds, with Hedglin third in 57.23 seconds.

Both The Rock's relay teams posted season-best performances, with the 4x100-meter relay team finishing first in 42.48 seconds and the 4x400m squad of Sims, McLaughlin, Jewel and Rector winning in 3:16.66.

Friday's meet was the final tune-up for SRU before heading to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, which will take place May 13-15 at West Chester University.
