WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team opened competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships Thursday at West Chester University.
Brady Wert leads the decathlon after the first five events.
Wert posted a score of 3,473 points on the opening day of the decathlon and will enter competition in the final five events Friday with the lead.
Also contested Thursday was the 10,000-meter run, the only final of the first day.
Alex Koksal led SRU with a 14th-place finish, posting a time of 32:48.23.
Matt Mumford finished 21st in 33:34.43.
Defending champion Shippensburg leads the team scoring race with 14 points after the first day of competition. Lock Haven sits second with 11 points, followed by Edinboro (8), Indiana (4) and Millersville (2). No other teams scored points on day one.
The championships will continue Friday, with finals in many field events and preliminary rounds in the majority of the track events.
