WEST CHESTER, Pa. – A new personal record in the 10,000-meter run by junior Sean Stetler resulted in his first conference championship as the Red Raider outdoor track and field team had three runners place on the first night of competition to put Shippensburg in the early lead at the 2010 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Farrell Stadium on the campus of West Chester University.

Stetler, SU's first 10K conference champion since current assistant coach Dan Helfrick won in 2005, entered the race as the conference's No. 12 seed. He emerged early as one of the five pacesetters in the lead pack and brilliantly maintained his pace with the frontrunners. As the race entered its final third, Stetler increased his burst and hit a splendid stride through the final four laps before concluding with a convincing eight-second victory in an NCAA-provisional qualifying time of 30:40.17.

After a strong debut performance last year in which he finished 10th, sophomore Brandon Boyer ran an intelligent race and placed sixth on Thursday night in 31:34.69 to net Shippensburg three additional points. Boyer kept pace with a large pack before slowly increasing his stride throughout the final third of the race, gaining eight places down the stretch.

Junior Ethan Rissell was Shippensburg's third scorer, placing eighth in 31:40.59 to add another point to the cause. Rissell kept a strong pace throughout the race and held off advancing runners at the conclusion of the competition.

Friday's competition in the multis begins from West Chester around 9:30 a.m. before field events start up at noon. Preliminary qualifying begins on the track at 1 p.m.
