WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Bryan Beegle won the 5,000 meters on Friday with an impressive closing lap and was one of four SU runners among the top seven finishers to highlight a strong second day of competition for the Shippensburg University men's outdoor track and field team at the 2010 PSAC Outdoor Championships from West Chester University.

Through seven events, Shippensburg currently leads the meet with 58 points, just one ahead of Lock Haven and 19 ahead of East Stroudsburg. The Red Raiders have earned 37 points alone from the 5K and 10K despite being projected to earn just 16 based on the preliminary seedings.

Beegle earned his second career PSAC outdoor championship and fourth overall on the strength of a spectacular finish. After hanging with the lead pack of six for the majority of the race, Beegle began his surge in the final two laps and ultimately achieved an eight-second victory with a time of 14:52.88. The native of Gettysburg also won the steeplechase as a freshman in 2008 and tomorrow afternoon will vie for his second title in the event.

Sophomore Stephen Schelander also had a phenomenal close in the 5K, gaining several places over the final two laps to finish third overall with a time of 15:05.87. Junior Sean Stetler, last night's 10K champion, finished fourth in 15:12.10 while freshman Matt Gillette earned seventh place in 15:23.36.

Junior Steve D'Arcy thrived in the shot put and was one of two placewinners for Shippensburg in the event. He shattered his previous season-best effort to earn third place after a throw of 50 feet 11 inches. Sophomore Travis Nye placed eighth after a shot put of 47 feet 8.5 inches.

Four Red Raider freshmen placed in the long jump to net Shippensburg an additional 11 points toward its team score. The leader of the SU pack was Matthew Terry, who earned fourth place with a jump of 23 feet 2.75 inches. Kyle Dickinson took sixth place with a jump of 22 feet 10 inches; Elijah Trusty earned seventh after a mark of 22 feet 8.75 inches and Cody DeBoer rounded out the scorers with a jump of 22 feet 5.75 inches.

Junior Andrew Campolongo capped off a strong weekend of competition in the decathlon with a sixth-place finish. Campolongo especially thrived in the pole vault (14 feet 3.25 inches), the 100-meter dash (11.82 seconds) and the long jump (6.10 meters) to achieve his best finish to date at the outdoor conference championships.

Saturday's competition begins from West Chester at 11 a.m. with the men's pole vault. Action on the track starts at 12:30 p.m. with the men's 4x100-meter relay.
