Kortz earns Daktronics, Inc. first team All-Region honor

Rock softball standout Jessica Kortz has been named to first team Daktronics, Inc. All-Region honors in voting by the Atlantic Region's sports information directors.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior softball standout Jessica Kortz has been named to Daktronics, Inc. first team All-Atlantic Region honors in voting by the region's sports information directors.

Kortz, who earned the first team honor at catcher, will now be eligible for All-America honors, as all first team selections in each region advance to the national ballot.

Kortz, a native of Charleston, W. Va., earned her fourth consecutive All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honor earlier this month when she was named to first team accolades in the PSAC-West.

The senior slugger led The Rock with 12 home runs, 45 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .738. She finished the season with 47 hits in 126 at bats, including six doubles and two triples. Her 45 RBIs set a single-season record at SRU, while her 12 home runs rank second all-time for a single-season. Kortz amassed career records of 40 home runs and 153 RBIs in her four seasons.

During the 2010 campaign, Kortz became the first player in Slippery Rock history to be named Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Player of the Week. She earned that prestigious title after belting five home runs and bringing in 16 runs in a five-game stretch. She finished that week with an unbelievable 2.091 slugging percentage.

Kortz appeared in 175 games with 170 starts over her four-year career. She posted a career batting average of .365 with 178 hits, including 28 doubles, four triples and 40 home runs.

The ballot for Daktronics, Inc. All-America honors will be assembled and voted on by the nation's sports information directors in the next few weeks.
