Dishong earns lacrosse program's first All-Region honor

Brianne Dishong was named Friday to IWLCA All-Atlantic Region lacrosse honors, becoming the first SRU lacrosse player to earn regional honors since the program returned to the varsity level in 2007.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Brianne Dishong became the first Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse player since 1989 to garner All-Region honors when she was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region team Friday.

Dishong was named to second team honors as a defender, accompanying her first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honor earned earlier this month.

Dishong, who last season became the first Rock player to earn All-Conference honors since the program returned to varsity competition in 2007, is now the only Rock lacrosse player to earn regional accolades since the program returned to the Division II level.

A junior from Stow, Ohio, Dishong has led the defensive unit for SRU over each of the last two seasons, including the 2010 campaign when she finished with team-highs of 44 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers, while committing just 12 fouls.

The Rock finished the 2010 season with a 7-10 overall record, marking just the sixth time in the history of the program that the team has posted seven or more wins. The seven wins are the most since the team returned to Division II action and is the best record since the 1989 team finished with eight wins.

By way of earning All-Region honors, Dishong will now be eligible for All-America voting, which will be done by the nation's head coaches. The IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams will be announced May 25.
