Alvernia Host Reading Wounded Warrior 5k

(May 1, 2010) Reading, Pa – Alvernia University hosted the first annual Reading Wounded Warrior 5k Race/Walk to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a national organization supporting wounded veterans. The race is hosted around the nation to honor and support the daily sacrifices made by the brave men and women in all branches of the United States Military. The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors by raising awareness and enlisting the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, as well as allowing each service member to assist one another and create unique programs for those who sacrificed for their fellow countrymen.

The race was run through Angelica Park and finished at Alvernia University's new turf track. There were 5 different age groups that the race was divided into, 18 & under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 and over. Awards were given to the top three in each age group.

Assistant Athletic Director, Men & Women's Track & Field Head Coach and Alvernia event coordinator for this project, Laura Gingrich commented, “I think it was a terrific opportunity for our student-athletes to take part in an event that benefits our wounded veterans and their families. If you have not been directly affected by such tragedy or loss, this event brings to light, the need for raising awareness and assistance for the Wounded Warrior Project. There were almost 400 participants in the 5k run/walk for the first year of the event, and I was proud of our student-athletes and coaches who took the time from their day to make this event successful. We're looking forward to hosting next year's 2nd annual event.”

Alvernia University's Athletic Department is proud to say that some of our student athletes helped make this event such a huge success. Members and coaches of the Women & Men's Track Team, Volleyball Team, Men and Women's Cross Country Team, Men's Tennis and Women's Lacrosse Team all volunteered their time to ensure that this race went as smooth as possible. The student- athletes helped with the early morning registration, throughout the course as well as helping clean up from all of the day's success.
