NEW ORLEANS – The Shippensburg University track and field/cross country programs finished the 2009-10 calendar year ranked among the Top 15 overall programs in Division II. The Lady Raiders finished the year fourth in the nation while the Raider men ranked 13th. Both programs were the national pacesetters from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
On a national scale, the Lady Raider program only trailed two national powerhouses (Grand Valley State and Adams State) and a Seattle Pacific squad that boasted 12-time national champion Jessica Pixler. It is the highest ranking ever achieved by Shippensburg University.
The program yielded a total of 10 All-Americans during the 2009-10 campaign, including
Mary Dell finishing all three seasons with an All-America citation. Sophomore
Neely Spence won indoor and outdoor national championships in the 5K. The cross country program also finished 15th in Division II.
The men's national finish was aided by the cross country program's 13th-place performance that featured strong runs by
Stephen Schelander,
Bryan Beegle,
Matt Gillette and
Josh Neyhart.
Donnie Graybill finished fifth in the indoor heptathlon and
Josh Hostetler earned an eighth-place finish in the javelin to earn All-America honors.
The NCAA Division II Program of the Year awards are presented annually to the most outstanding men's and women's cross country/track & field program. The awards honor the institution that achieves the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on its finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Division II Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
