Journals from St. Lucia: Wednesday

This is the third in a series of blogs chronicling the SRU Forgotten Angels trip to St. Lucia. This entry covers the third day on the island and was written by Thomas Pool, Alison Hindley and Patrick Cormac.

Forgotten Angels Day 3 Alison Hindley
Day 3

We woke up this morning to gorgeous weather, which was a pleasure compared to yesterday's tropical rain. Our breakfast was delicious once again, we are being spoilt by our hotel. The sun was beaming down to us on the way to the field, so it was nice compared to yesterday's rainstorms. We were excited to work with the children once again as we had a good turnout the day before.

The day of coaching started off the same way it will all week with a good warm up. We tried to get one of the local teenagers to take the warm up which was out of the ordinary for him, as they are shy and don't like to take the lead. But we were making strides forward and he eventually got into the swing of things and started growing in the role. One of the problems on the island is that there is no real structure, so this is one of our challenges that we would like to leave a footprint on before we leave.

After the morning of soccer had finished we then took the group of 5-10 year olds to either clean up the beach or clean up the soup kitchen. As we got to the beach the group was then again split up, one group headed by Alison Hindley and Tom Pool made their way to the local basketball court to clean up and the other group headed by Noreen Herlihy and Pat Cormac stayed on the beach. The whole idea behind the “beach clean up” is to show these kids that giving back to your community is an important aspect of being an athlete.

Forgotten Angels Day 3 clean up
It is difficult to believe but we are at day 3 already. Time is flying and it truly is a privilege being on this island. We spent some time on the beach cliff jumping and enjoying the Caribbean sunshine. It's been an eventful couple of days thus far and we're excited to see what the next few days have in store. We're looking forward to concentrating on dribbling and turning with the soccer ball tomorrow and have one or two scores to settle with some of the older lads that have been far from conservative in their suggestions that they can beat the college kids at soccer. We will keep you all posted naturally. That'll do it for now.
