Journals from St. Lucia: Friday

This is the fifth in a series of blogs chronicling the SRU Forgotten Angels trip to St. Lucia. This entry was written by Mike Formento and Sarah Cadwallader.

Forgotten Angels Day One St. Lucia
Day 5

We woke up this morning to a bit of rain but that quickly subsided after a delicious breakfast of fresh local fruits and Creole baked breads. After a long walk from the hotel down to the stadium we were ready to start our day.

Quickly after arriving at the field we were informed that we were to play a exhibition soccer game against a group of all-stars made up of the local campers. That was sure to get the blood pumping and we were all eager to participate in the match.

It started off brightly with a tap in from close range by Pat Cormac after some lovely team buildup play. That was followed by Ali Hindley hitting an absolute scorcher from 35 yards out, right in the upper corner, leaving the opposing goalkeeper helpless. The team was in a confident mood but gave up a goal late in the first half and then eventually conceding in the second half thanks to an own goal from St. Lucia's own Nani. The game was enjoyed by all and is sure to be something that we remember for years.

After a hot day on the pitch the group decided to go snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea. We were taken by water taxi to a nearby resort to experience some deep sea wonders. We were shown many tropical fish by our aquatic tour guide and then were able to relax on the beach for a few hours before being picked up after.

After quick showers and of course a change of wardrobe we were off with some of the local coaches to a thank you dinner put together by Gigg, the head of the soccer academy in St. Lucia. We spent a few hours with them on this lovely evening and it really made us feel that we were making a huge difference in these people's lives.

We then travelled back to the hotel where it was off to bed early because as always we have an early start to the morning tomorrow!

Until later-
Mike & Sarah
