BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team opened its 2010 season with a 2-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Thursday afternoon at Wood Street Field.

The Rock (1-0-0) found the back of the net twice in the second half to hand the Bobcats (0-1-0) their first loss of the season.

From there, The Rock controlled possession in the first half and went to the break with a 7-3 advantage in total shots and a 3-1 edge in corners.

After nearly 20 minutes of play in the second half, the scoreless tie was broken when a Bobcat defender put the ball in her own net for an own goal in the 65th minute.

Ashley Paganie, the leading scorer on the team last season, added an insurance tally in the 78th minute when she took a pass from Kara Mullins and drove a long shot into the upper corner of the net from just outside the box. The assist was Mullins' first collegiate point.

Alyssa Barrett and Rachel Knapp finished the game with a team-high three shots each, while Paganie and Hindley added two each.

Dana O'Neill earned her first collegiate win and shutout in goal, recording four saves on seven shots faced.

Lauren Hessian took the loss for West Virginia Wesleyan, allowing two goals and recording four saves.

For the match, The Rock finished with advantages of 13-7 in total shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks.

Slippery Rock will travel to Greensburg, Pa. Sunday to face Seton Hill in a non-conference match slated for 1 p.m. The Rock opens the home portion of its 2010 schedule Sept. 8 with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match against Millersville.
