SALISBURY, Md. – The Slippery Rock University men's cross country team opened its 2010 season by winning the Sea Gull Invitational hosted by Salisbury University Saturday morning.

The Rock, competing without their top runner, Brian Ulrich, finished with a team score of 47 points to win the title. Salisbury placed second with 55 points, followed by Rowan (75), Shenandoah (114) and Marietta (115) rounding out the top-five.

Jason Leonard led the way for Slippery Rock, placing second overall after covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:52.

Dylan Klein was the second Rock finisher, crossing the line in 10th-place with a time of 26:30. Eric Geddis followed in 12th at 26:38 with Alex Koksal right behind him in 13th at 26:39. Morgan Elliott rounded out the SRU scorers with a 15th-place finish in a time of 26:44.

“We're pleased with the way things went today,” said head coach John Papa. “We have a long way to go before we need to worry about putting in really great performances at the championship meets in November and December, but this was a good start for our men.”

The Rock will rest next weekend before hosting meets on back-to-back weekends, beginning with the SRU quad Friday Sept. 17 and concluding with the SRU Invitational the following Saturday.
