#13 Rock draws with #7 Charleston, 1-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.Kenneth Fultz scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to lead the 13th-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team to a 1-1 double overtime draw against No. 7 Charleston (W. Va.) Sunday at Shippensburg University.

Sunday's game was a rematch of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final last year, where Charleston defeated SRU 3-2 to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Golden Eagles (1-0-1) controlled the first half of the game, outshooting The Rock (1-0-1) 13-5 before the intermission, but could not manage to score.

Dion Peters broke the scoreless tie at the start of the second half when he beat Rock keeper Greg Blum on an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.

The Rock rallied to take control of the second half, finishing with a 7-3 edge in shots, but needed to capitalize on a penalty kick opportunity to find the equalizer.

In the 72nd minute, Fultz buried his penalty kick after a Charleston defender was called for a foul inside the box.

At the end of regulation, Charleston held a 16-12 advantage in total shots.

The Golden Eagles posted a 4-1 advantage in shots in the overtime period, but did not manage to put any on target. The Rock's lone chance of the overtime periods came in the 110th minute when Alex Swartz's header went wide.

For the game, Charleston finished with advantage of 20-13 in total shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 13-2 in corner kicks.

Blum earned the tie in goal for SRU after allowing one goal and recording five saves. His counterpart, Sean Teepen, allowed one goal and recorded three saves for the Golden Eagles.

The Rock will face its second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent when No. 17 Millersville travels to Thompson Stadium for a 4 p.m. match Wednesday.

Wednesday's game also marks the opening of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schedule and is a rematch of last season's PSAC championship game, where SRU defeated then No. 1-ranked Millersville, 2-1.
