Rock falls to Seton Hill in overtime, 3-2

Seton Hill scored in the fifth minute of overtime to defeat The Rock field hockey team 3-2 in the season opener Wednesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team dropped its 2010 season opener Wednesday night at Thompson Stadium, falling 3-2 in overtime to Seton Hill.

Seton Hill's (4-0) Krista Archambeau scored on a breakaway off an assist from Gillian Hilbert in the fifth minute of overtime to seal the win.

The Rock (0-1), under the direction of first-year head coach Julie Zoolkoski, came out of the gates firing, scoring the game's first goal in the fourth minute. Allie Hartman found Gabrielle Malishchak on the game's first corner attempt. Malishchak buried a shot into the right corner of the net for the first goal of the season.

Seton Hill tied the game in the 25th minute when Heather Apodaca scored off an assist from Janelle Hofer, sending the game to halftime notched at 1-1.

The Griffins broke the tie and took a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute when Allegra Ramos scored off an assist from Apodaca.

The Rock battled back to tie the game at 2-2 in the 45th minute when Skylar Brosse deflected a shot from Allison Banks into the right side of the net.

Neither team could convert over the final 25 minutes, setting up the overtime finish.

Malishchak led The Rock with a goal on three shots, while Brosse added a goal on two shots. Hartman and Banks were each credited with assists.

Lisa Belcastro took the loss in goal, allowing three goals and recording nine saves.

Seton Hill was led by Apodaca with a goal and an assist on three shots. Archambeau had the game winner to go along with a game-high nine shots.

Brittany Parker earned the win in goal, allowing two goals and recording four saves.

Seton Hill finished the game with advantages of 19-12 in total shots, 12-6 in shots on goal and 9-6 in penalty corners.

The Rock will travel to Kutztown Saturday for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game at 11 a.m.
