Cross country teams using home invitational for a good cause

Long distance runners will gather donations for American Heart Association this weekend

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 10) – On Saturday, Sept. 11, the Waynesburg University men's and women's cross country teams will host their annual invitational at the Greene County Airport. The festivities begin with the women's collegiate 6K race at 10:30 a.m. and will continue with the men's collegiate 8K race at 11:15 a.m. Team members are urging fellow Waynesburg students, alumni, faculty and the general public to attend the home meet.

At this year's invitational, participants and spectators will have the opportunity to donate to the American Heart Association in memory of former Cranberry High School wrestling coach, Steven Rood. Coach Rood is the father of senior runner Sarah Beth Rood. Tragically, he passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2010 of heart disease.

The Waynesburg cross country teams are encouraging people to take care of their hearts with any form of exercise, including running. Coach Rood was an avid runner and supporter of many types of physical exercise. His goal was simple; he just wanted people to move.

The entire Waynesburg University cross country program invites the public to join them in support of the American Heart Association. Cash or check, made payable to the AHA, will be accepted at the meet and is tax deductible. The team will also honor Coach Rood by wearing white bandanas for both the men's and women's races. Sarah Beth Rood will also sing the National Anthem before the start of the women's race.
