Rock blanks Cheyney, 30-0

Ryan Sabo threw two touchdown passes to Devin Goda to lead The Rock to a 30-0 shutout over Cheyney Saturday afternoon. SRU improves to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Box Score

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Redshirt sophomore quarterback Ryan Sabo and junior wide receiver Devin Goda hooked up for two first-half touchdown passes Saturday afternoon to lead Slippery Rock University to a 30-0 win over hosting Cheyney University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” football action at O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium.

The win was the second in as many games this season for the Green and White, who return home next Saturday to host West Chester University in another PSAC “crossover” game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. for the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame and “White-Out Night” contest on Bob DiSpirito at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Cheyney, meanwhile, was shutout for the second time in two games this fall. The loss was the Wolves' 30th straight and 51st in the last 53 games.

The Sabo-to-Goda TD tosses covered 13 and 44 yards, respectively, and came on back-to-back Rock possessions in the second period.

Sabo finished the game with eight completions in 17 attempts for 138 yards and two TDs with one interception, while Goda had seven receptions for 103 yards and two TDs.

Redshirt sophomore running back Chris Darby scored the game's first TD and the ultimate winning tally on a one-yard run. He finished the game with 140 yards on 20 rushing attempts and the TD in a backup role.

True freshman running back LaQuinn Stephens-Howling made his first collegiate start in place of Akeem Satterfield (ankle injury) and finished the game with 68 yards on 12 carries.

Sophomore Thomas Miller, listed on The Rock roster as a safety, saw action as the Green and White's No. 3 running back and scored the game's final points on a seven-yard run with three minutes left in the game.

Senior kicking specialist #C.J. Bahr# booted a 24-yard field goal and three extra points to round out The Rock scoring.

SRU held a 351-259 total yardage advantage behind 213 rushing yards and 138 passing yards. Cheyney ran for 133 yards and passed for 126 yards.

The teams combined for 234 yards on 25 penalties. The Rock was called for 14 penalties for 137 yards, while Cheyney was whistled 11 times for 97 yards.

Rock freshman punter James McCombie averaged 44.5 yards per punt and had three downed inside the Cheyney 20-yard line.

The Rock outgained Cheyney by a 237-89 margin in the first half and held a 23-0 lead on the scoreboard when the teams headed to the locker room for the halftime intermission.

After a scoreless first quarter, The Rock scored on four consecutive possessions in the second 15-minute period.

Darby scored the first points of the game on a one-yard run with 13:20 left in the second period. The play capped a six-play, 33-yard drive, but Bahr's extra-point kick was blocked, so The Rock had to settle for a 6-0 lead.

The Green and White marched 85 yards in nine plays on its next possession. Sabo and Goda hooked up for their first TD connection, a 13-yarder, to cap the drive. Bahr's PAT kick made it 13-0 with 5:05 left in the first half.

Sabo connected with Goda for a 44-yard TD on the ensuing Rock possession to cap a four-play, 44-yard scoring drive set up by a short Cheyney punt. The TD extended The Rock lead to 20-0 with 1:54 left before halftime.

A shanked punt on Cheyney's next possession set up a seven-play, 39-yard drive that culminated with a 24-yard field goal by Bahr with five seconds remaining before intermission.

The Rock appeared to score on a fifth successive possession, its opening drive of the second half, but junior wide receiver Geron James lost the handle on the ball just shy of the goal line after catching a bubble-screen pass from Sabo.

As it turned out, though, neither team was able to score any third-period points and Miller's TD run, which capped a six-play, 36-yard drive, accounted for the only second-half points.

Notes:
Sabo and Goda have connected for all three Rock passing TDs this fall … They hooked up for a 73-yard TD in the Sept. 2 season opener vs. Merrimack (Mass.) … Prior to Saturday, The Rock and Cheyney had not met since 1993 …The Rock is now 3-0 all-time against the Wolves.
