WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The 12th-ranked West Chester University women's soccer team handed Slippery Rock its first loss of the season, 3-0, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Rock (3-1-0, 1-1-0 PSAC) and the Golden Rams (4-0-0, 2-0-0 PSAC) each had chances throughout the game, with West Chester finishing with a slim 12-9 advantage in total shots.
West Chester scored two goals in non-traditional manner, including the game's first goal on a penalty kick and the final goal directly off a corner kick.
Sarah Oswald was awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. She beat Rock keeper Dana O'Neill for the game's opening goal.
West Chester tallied its second goal shortly after when Jen Gangl found the back of the net off an assist from Oswald in the 33rd minute.
Galgl scored her second of the game and the final goal in the 71st minute when she bent a corner kick directly into the net.
The Golden Rams finished the game with advantages of 12-9 in total shots, 10-5 in shots on goal and 7-3 in corner kicks.
O'Neill took the loss, the first of her career, allowing three goals and recording a career-high seven saves. Her counterpart, Lyndsie Bernardini, earned the win after recording five saves.
Kara Mullins tallied two shots on goal to lead SRU, while
Rachel Knapp,
Ashley Paganie and
Alyssa Barrett each had one shot on target.
The Rock is back in action next weekend with a pair of PSAC matches on the road. SRU will take on Bloomsburg Friday and East Stroudsburg Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. kickoffs.
