SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --
Anthony Paganie's 33-yard strike in the seventh minute proved to be the game-winner for the ninth-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team in a 1-0 win over Atlantic Region rival Shepherd University Tuesday at Thompson Stadium.
Jeremy Feehan sent a pass from the right back position down the sideline to Paganie, who played the ball off his chest and turned and fired into the top left corner of the net past a diving Shepherd keeper for the game's only goal, just 6:30 into the opening half.
The Rock (4-0-1) controlled much of the play in the midfield and held Shepherd (2-2-0) to just five total shots and only one shot on goal.
SRU, which entered the game ranked second in the Atlantic Region and a program-best ninth in the national rankings released Tuesday, finished the game with advantages of 15-5 in total shots, 7-1 in shots on goal and 11-2 in corner kicks.
Shepherd entered Tuesday's game ranked 10th in the Atlantic Region after not being ranked last week.
Paganie's goal was his third tally and second game-winner of the season. Feehan's assist stands as his first point on the year.
Paganie and
Kenneth Fultz led SRU with two shots on goal each, while Thomas Pool,
Tynan Smith and
Michael Ramirez all added one shot on target.
Greg Blum earned the shutout in goal after recording one save. He improves his season record to 4-0-1 with a 0.57 goals against average and a save percentage of .812.
Tyler Huff had the lone shot on goal for Shepherd. Edgar Lopez Zuniga took the loss in goal after allowing one goal and recording five saves.
The Rock will have little time to rest with back-to-back conference road games scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Thanks to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's new soccer alignment where all teams compete in one division, SRU will travel to Bloomsburg Friday and No. 17 East Stroudsburg Saturday. Kickoff for both games is set for 3:30 p.m.
