Huskies upset #9 SRU with penalty kick

Bloomsburg converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to score a 1-0 upset win over No. 9 Slippery Rock Friday in PSAC action.

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg's Tim Pfender was awarded a penalty kick and converted on his attempt in the 88th minute to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 upset win over the ninth-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match Friday at Sports Stadium.

The Rock (4-1-1, 2-1-0 PSAC) finished the game with commanding advantages in total shots and shots on goal with a 16-6 edge in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal, one of which was the penalty kick.

Pfender was awarded the penalty kick for the Huskies (2-2-0, 1-0-0 PSAC) after Jeremy Feehan was called for a foul in the box at the 87:05 mark. Pfender went the opposite way as Rock keeper Greg Blum to net the only goal of the contest.

Pfender's PK was ironic, in that he was yellow-carded in the 45th minute of the first half, giving The Rock a penalty kick. Kenneth Fultz missed wide on the chance to keep the game notched at 0-0 at halftime.

Fultz and Mitchell Walters each registered four total shots and two shots on goal to lead SRU, while Anthony Paganie, Drew Donoghue and Michael Ramirez all added one shot on target.

Blum took the loss after allowing the PK and recording two saves.

Bernie Roell earned the win for Bloomsburg after recording eight saves.

Pfender, Francis Miller and Tom Kovack had the only shots on target for the Huskies.

The Rock will have no time to rest with another PSAC match on the horizon tomorrow. SRU will travel to undefeated No. 17 East Stroudsburg for a 3:30 p.m. match.
