SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -
Members of the Allegheny cross country program provided the team with a good look at the site of the 2010 NCAA Mideast Regional, racing to ninth out of 16 of the region's top varsity squads at the Pre Regional meet hosted by Carnegie Mellon. The Tartans, who are one of the best distance units in the region, showcased their top talent en route to the team title.

The race gave many of the Gators young athletes a chance to perform, and provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to evaluate the future of the program. In addition, the Gators leaned on some upperclassmen keen are becoming part of Allegheny's core contingent.

“I thought the guys ran well,” said head coach Brent Wilkerson. “I was happy with their effort as well as their performance. Today's course was challenging, but it's a good atmosphere for spectators and will make for a great NCAA regional.”

Junior Garrett Gleesman closed as Allegheny's top finisher, crossing the line in 44th-place with a time of 27:48. Senior Matt Brush ran a clip of 28:32 and finished 62nd.

Freshman John Denison paced the rookie efforts, finishing just back of Brush in 28:37. First-year Lance Claflin (29:43) also competed for the Blue and Gray, as did Evan Breitsch, who was 15:45 coming through the 5k before finishing in 29:17.

Junior John Conant ran a good part of the race with Brush, but fell back in the last part of the race en route to a time of 29:00. Senior Steve Cottington delivered an individual highlight for the entire group as his final clip of 29:04 resulted in a personal record.
