SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --
Shelby Ward scored a goal late in the first half that stood as the game-winner as the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Edinboro, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match Wednesday at Egli Field.
Edinboro (6-2-1, 3-2-1 PSAC) took the first three shots of the game before The Rock (6-3-0, 4-3-0 PSAC) took control of the match, firing off the next four shots and finishing the half with a 7-6 advantage in shots.
Ward's game-winner came in the 35th minute when she took a pass from
Danielle Turner and dribbled around Edinboro keeper Kate Stukbauer to an open net.
The Rock's dominance in the game was further cemented in the second half when SRU finished with a 9-3 edge in total shots and held the Fighting Scots to just one shot on goal.
Alli Bird improved to 3-1 on the season after recording two saves in the shutout effort. Stukbauer took the loss after registering six saves.
For the match, SRU finished with advantages of 16-9 in total shots and 7-2 in shots on goal. Edinboro posted a 5-3 edge in corner kicks but was called for 12 fouls to just five for The Rock.
Ward posted a game-high six total shots, including four on goal, to lead SRU.
Kara Mullins added three total shots and two on target.
Amanda Bartell was the only Fighting Scot player to tally more than one shot, finishing with four total attempts, one of which was on target. Cassee Kiplinger had the only other shot on goal.
Slippery Rock will travel to Clarion Saturday for a PSAC match on Homecoming for the Golden Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
