LEHIGH, Pa. –
Allegheny's distance unit traveled across the state on Friday to compete in one of the nation's largest cross country meets. Competing in the College Women's Brown 6k, the Gators finished 22nd out of 41 teams. Sophomore Kelly Gallagher was the Gators' top finisher.

Gallagher boasted a 20-second personal record, splitting 22:46 and finishing 29th overall in the race. Senior captain Katie Stancik averaged 6:18 per mile en route to a final time of 23:25. Stancik delivered a strong opening mile (5:55), while persevering against the elements.

The Paul Short course was dominated by rain and mud throughout the day, and the conditions impacted nearly everyone's performance. Freshman Kristina Martin was one of Friday's victims, despite a great first 3k. Martin recovered after battling through a difficult middle and finished with a time of 24:02.  Sophomore Sara Mitrano and junior Amber Wetzel worked well together during the race and finished just back of Martin. Mitrano came through the finish line in 24:15, with Wetzel just one second back.

“I was really proud of our women today,” remarked head coach Brent Wilkerson. “Kelly bounced back from a tough stretch of training; (Sara) Mitrano and Amber were awesome and gave us a great boost; and I thought Kristina raced really hard, showing a lot of resilience despite getting bogged down by the mud. Our focus is on being ready to run as a cohesive unit in November and today signaled a great start.”

Seniors Laura Heltman and Angela Dyer capped Allegheny's lineup, crossing in 24:56, and 25:46, respectively. Allegheny's top five orchestrated an outstanding delta, as the difference between the first and fifth runners was only 24 seconds.

Rutgers University pulled away from Princeton to claim the team title in the 41-team field. Allegheny finished just ahead of the University of Pittsburgh and George Washington University as the Gators competed against many of the country's top teams across all NCAA divisions.
