SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Crystal Burnick won her third consecutive race of the season to lead the 16th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the SRU Invitational Saturday at Cooper's Lake Campground.
Burnick put in her best performance of the year, covering the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:09 to win the individual title, 18 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Penn State's club team won the meet with a team score of 37 points. Dickinson placed second with 47 points, followed by Elizabethtown in third (70), The Rock fourth (101) and Messiah rounding out the top-five with 169 points.
SRU was without the help of three of its potential top-five runners Saturday as
Jen Harpp,
Abby Michaelian and
Stephanie Turak all sat out for various reasons.
The Rock's second finisher was newcomer
Stephanie Case, placing 15th with a time of 24:11. Case was followed by Rebecca Belding in 23rd at 24:39,
Caitlin Hancox in 30th at 24:48 and
Sally Dugas in 32nd at 24:55.
Rounding out the top-seven finishers for SRU were
Becky Younger in 44th with a time of 25:21 and
Kelsey Wendel in 46th with a time of 25:26.
The Rock will rest next weekend before returning to action Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Penn State National Invite in State College, Pa.
