SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Despite holding advantages in shots and penalty corners, the Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a 3-1 decision to No. 7 Bellarmine on Saturday at Thompson Stadium. Bellarmine is the sixth rank team that Slippery Rock has faced this season.

As a team, The Rock (1-7, 0-2 PSAC-West) recorded 18 shots and 16 penalty corners compared to the Knights' 11 shots and six corners, but SRU was only able to convert one of the scoring chances into goals.

Slippery Rock jumped out on the attack early when junior Skylar Brosse rebounded a blocked attempt by freshman Allison Banks and proceeded to put a shot past Bellarmine goalie Samantha Biedron for a goal in the fifth minute of play. Brosse's goal, which was her second of the season, put The Rock up 1-0.

However, Bellarmine (9-0) tied the game at 1-1 when Lauren Schmenig fired a shot over senior goalie Lisa Belcastro's glove at 11:54 in the first half.

The Green and White continued to control the first half, but were held scoreless as were the Knights and both clubs headed into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

Bellarmine wasted little time in the second half as Emily West and Rachael McAllister scored goals at 41:50 and 47:06 respectively to go ahead of SRU 3-1.

Slippery Rock was able to get off seven shots and draw five penalty corners in the final 35 minutes, but couldn't find a way to score as the Knights managed to keep their perfect record enact with the 3-1 win.

In addition to her goal, Brosse tied freshman Kaitlin McGinnis for a team-high with three shots on goal. Sophomore Gabrielle Malishchak added two shots on goal for The Rock as well.

Belcastro took the loss for Slippery Rock after making four saves and allowing three goals.

McAllister had a goal and an assist to lead Bellarmine.

Slippery Rock will hit the road for the first time in four matches on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. showdown with Mansfield.
