CLARION, Pa. – Clarion University scored two late goals in regulation to steal a double overtime 2-2 tie away from a dominant Slippery Rock University women's soccer team Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match in Clarion.
The Rock (6-3-1, 4-3-1 PSAC) controlled the pace of play for the entire game and outshot Clarion (4-3-2, 3-1-2 PSAC) 15-4 for the contest, including 3-0 in the extra sessions. The Rock posted advantages of 11-4 in shots on goal and 5-2 in corner kicks.
“It's a cruel game,” said head coach
Noreen Herlihy. “We didn't do anything wrong tonight, but we're coming away with one point instead of three and that's tough after the way we controlled the game.”
SRU scored the first two goals of the game and held onto a 2-0 lead until the final five minutes when Clarion scored two goals in a span of two minutes to tie the game.
Ashley Paganie put Slippery Rock on the board first when she converted a pass from
Danielle Turner in the 26th minute.
Shelby Ward added to the lead with a goal in the 48th minute, converting off an assist from
Alison Hindley to put The Rock up 2-0.
Clarion's Jill Miller scored in the 86 and 87th minutes off assists from Gabby Gray and Kristen Scheutzow to tie the game.
The Rock held Clarion without a single shot attempt in the overtime sessions, but Jenna Kulik made three saves for the Golden Eagles to secure the tie.
Turner finished with a game-high five shots, while Hindley and Ward each tallied three shots.
Alli Bird earned the tie in goal, recording two saves in 110 minutes of action. Kulik made nine saves for Clarion.
The Rock will travel to Mansfield Wednesday, Oct. 6, for a 3 p.m. PSAC match with the Mountaineers.
