Rock Volleyball to honor breast cancer survivors Oct. 15

Breast cancer survivors, family members and friends and anyone whose life has been touched by breast or any other form of cancer are invited to be special guests at The Rock's volleyball match vs. Gannon University

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's volleyball team will pay tribute to breast cancer survivors as part of the team's fifth annual “Dig for the Cure” match to benefit breast cancer awareness Friday, Oct. 15 against Gannon University. The match is at 7 p.m. in Morrow Field House.

As part of the event, The Rock volleyball team will honor Ann Lueken, the late wife of SRU Director of Athletics Paul Lueken, who lost a 13-year battle with breast cancer in August 2010.

Veteran Head Coach Laurie Lokash and The Rock volleyball student-athletes invite breast cancer survivors, family members and friends and anyone whose life has been touched by breast or any other form of cancer to join the Green and White as special guests during a pregame ceremony and throughout the match.

Participants are asked to provide their name and e-mail address by Wednesday, Oct. 13, by calling the SRU Sports Information Office at 724.738.2086 or via email at laura.vernon@sru.edu.

Rock volleyball student-athletes are currently soliciting support for the Oct. 15 event via either direct donations or pledges for every dig recorded during the match. The Rock is averaging 16.2 digs per set this season.

The team will also be selling pink “Dig for the Cure” T-shirts for $10 each. Payment can be made in cash or checks payable to SRUAA/Volleyball. Area businesses will also donate items to be raffled during the match and free-will donations will be accepted. Fans will also be able to participate in a volleyball serving contest.

All proceeds will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, which distributes monies to local chapters. The closest Komen Foundation chapter to the SRU campus is located in Pittsburgh.

The first four SRU Dig for the Cure events raised more than $16,000 for the Komen Foundation.

To make a pledge or get more information about the SRU event, contact Rock Assistant Coach Erin Street at erin.street@sru.edu or 724. 738.4960 or SRU Sports Information Director Bob McComas at 724.738.2777 or robert.mccomas@sru.edu

The “Dig for the Cure” project was founded in 2003 at University of North Carolina-Charlotte Head Volleyball Coach Lisa Marston after her mother was diagnosed with the disease.
