SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Mitchell Walters scored an equalizer at the end of regulation and Toby Bowser struck a game-winning free kick in the first extra session to lead the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win over No. 15 Ashland Friday at Egli Field.

Friday's win was the fourth in a row for Slippery Rock, ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region, improving its record to 9-2-1. Ashland, which came into the game ranked second in the Midwest Region and 15th in the latest national poll, drops to 7-3-1.

After over 80 minutes of fairly even play with neither team finding the net, Ashland scored the game's first goal on a broken play with 8:48 left in regulation. After a Slippery Rock defender slipped at the midfield, Alex Finy found Louis Clark, who raced up the middle of the field and chipped a soft shot over Rock keeper Greg Blum and into the middle of the net.

The Rock changed formations following the goal, moving Walters and Patrick Conley up front to give SRU a five forward approach.

The change paid off when Walters struck the equalizer with 2:03 to play. Kenneth Fultz sent a free kick into the box, where Conley headed to ball to Walters, who sent a hard shot through traffic to the upper left corner of the net.

Neither team managed a shot in the final two minutes, setting up the overtime finish.

Slippery Rock was awarded a free kick in overtime after Ashland was whistled for a foul just outside the box on the left side.

Bowser noticed Ashland keeper Justin Nolan was on the right side of the net and bent a low line drive around the left side of the wall and into the open left side of the net for the winner.

Friday's game was one of the most evenly played matches of the season for Slippery Rock, as both teams finished with nearly the same statistical numbers. Each team finished with 16 total shots. The Rock edged Ashland 8-7 in shots on goal and 6-5 in corner kicks.

Blum improved his record to 8-2-1 on the season after recording five saves in the winning effort. Thomas Pool was credited with a defensive save in the first half after kicking away a shot from Ashland's Kenny Hewitt in the sixth minute.

Nolan took the loss in goal after recording six saves.

Bowser, Anthony Paganie, and David Moore each finished with two shots on goal for SRU, while Walters and Zach Hall each had one shot on target.

Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Wednesday, Oct. 13, with a crucial road trip to Gannon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
