SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team posted twice as many shots as No. 22 Kutztown, but the Golden Bears were able to come back from an early deficit to score a 1-1 double overtime tie in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday at Thompson Stadium.
Saturday's game was crucial in terms of the conference standings, as Slippery Rock improves to 7-3-2 overall and 5-3-2 in league play. Kutztown, which entered the game trailing SRU by one point in the league standings, improves to 8-3-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play.
The Rock came out of the gates firing in the first half, scoring just 2:52 into the game when
Dana Kiger banked a shot from 25 yards out off the left post off an assist from
Danielle Turner. The goal was the first of the career for the senior defender.
SRU kept the pressure on during the first half, finishing with a 12-3 advantage in shots.
All three of Kutztown's shots in the first half came from Stephanie Borland, who was able to find the back of the net with a shot in the 23rd minute to tie the game at 1-1. She took a pass from Shannon Pennock and scored from 15 yards out into the left side of the net.
After a high paced first half, the second half began with much of the action taking place at the midfield. Both teams managed just one shot in the first 25 minutes of the half.
Slippery Rock finished the half with a 5-2 edge in shots. Both teams tallied two shots in the first overtime, but keepers
Alli Bird and Casey Behrendt each made one save to keep the game notched at 1-1. In the final overtime session, Kutztown posted a 3-1 edge in shots, but again both keepers tallied one save to preserve the tie.
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 20-10 in total shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 8-6 in corner kicks.
Ashley Paganie posted a game-high six total shots, including two on target. Turner,
Kara Mullins, and
Shelby Ward all added three shots for SRU.
Borland led Kutztown with four shots, including two on goal. The only other player to tally more than one shot for the Golden Bears was Carolynne Kahl, who finished with two.
Bird was credited with three saves, while Behrendt registered five saves.
Slippery Rock will travel to Gannon Tuesday for the first of four remaining conference games. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
