SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Redshirt sophomore running back Akeem Satterfield rushed for 147 yards and four touchdowns and The Rock defense pitched a second-half shutout Saturday night to lead Slippery Rock University to a 28-14 win over visiting 24th-ranked Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Satterfield, who had 40 rushes in the game, scored on runs of seven, four, one and one yards to raise his season TD total to 11.

The Rock defense, after allowing Edinboro 14 points and 199 yards in total offense in the first half, held the Fighting Scots to 136 yards in the final two periods.

The win, coupled with Mercyhurst's 28-27 win over Indiana earlier in the day, moved The Rock (5-1, 2-1 PSAC-W) into a tie for second place in the division standings. SRU is tied with Indiana (4-2, 2-1) and Mercyhurst (4-2, 2-1), one game behind division-leading California (6-0, 3-0).

The Rock visits California for a 3:30 p.m. game next Saturday before returning home to entertain Lock Haven in the Oct. 25 Homecoming contest (2 p.m. kickoff).

Saturday's loss was the second in as many weeks for Edinboro, which saw its overall record fall to 3-2 and its PSAC-West to 1-2.

The Rock finished Saturday's game with a 343-335 advantage in total offense behind a balanced attack.

Complementing Satterfield's rushing effort, redshirt sophomore quarterback Ryan Sabo compiled season-high totals in all three categories with 17 completions in 23 attempts for 192 yards.

Junior wide receiver Devin Goda caught a game-high eight passes for 75 yards for SRU while junior wideout Kevin Sanders (46 yards) and redshirt freshman utility player Mike Bongivengo (41 yards) each had three catches.

Sophomore kicker Kurt Brackman booted an extra point after each of Satterfield's four TDs to round out The Rock scoring attack.

Junior linebacker Zach Sheridan made a game-high 10 tackles for The Rock defense, Senior cornerback Robert Doiley forced and recovered a fumble, redshirt freshman defensive end Ahman Milot recovered a fumble and sophomore defensive end Jeff Thompson had a forced fumble.

Edinboro redshirt freshman quarterback Cody Harris passed for 247 yards and one TD and rushed for a team-high 46 yards to lead the Fighting Scots' offensive effort.

The Rock wasted no time in scoring the first points of the game as they moved 59 yards in eight plays after the opening kickoff. Satterfield's seven-yard run capped the drive with 11:34 left to play in the first period.

The momentum quickly swung, though, as Edinboro scored on its first two possessions to tie the score at 7-7 and then take a 14-7 lead.

David Bostic caught a three-yard pass from Harris to cap the first Fighting Scots scoring drive, an 11-play, 76-yard march that reached the end zone with 5:57 left in the first period.

After the Edinboro defense forced The Rock offense into a three-and-out situation, the Fighting Scots went 46 yards in five plays to take the lead with 2:23 left in the opening period. D'Andrea Vaughn's two-yard drive accounted for the touchdown.

Edinboro had a chance to extend its lead on the final play of the first half, but a 45-yard field goal attempt by Alex Romanias sailed wide to left of the upright.

The guests outgained The Rock by a 199-130 margin in the opening two periods behind 131 passing and 47 rushing yards by Harris, who completed 14 of 18 pass attempts in the first two periods.

Sabo completed seven of 12 passes for 70 yards in the first half while Satterfield rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries.

The Rock defense forced Edinboro to punt on the opening drive of the second half of action to set the stage for three straight scoring drives by the Green and White offense.

Satterfield capped The Rock's first final-half drive with a four-yard run with 11:52 left in the third period. He then culminated the next drive with a one-yard burst at the 3:46 mark of the third period to give The Rock a 21-14 lead.

Edinboro appeared to be on the verge of tying the score at 21-21 on the Fighting Scots' drive following Satterfield's third TD of the game, but Doiley stripped Josh Brown of the fall just shy of the goal line and then pounced on the loose pigskin in the end zone for a touchback to end a 66-yard march.

That allowed The Rock to take a 21-14 lead into the final period of action.

The Rock went 80 yards in 12 plays on the ensuing drive, capped by a one-yard burst by Satterfield for his fourth TD, to push The Rock lead to 28-14 with 11:02 left in the game.

SRU's string of three straight scoring drives was snapped when Brackman's 40-yard field goal was blocked with 8:04 left to play. That scoring opportunity was set up by Milot's fumble recovery at the Edinboro 26.

Notes:

Satterfield has rushed for 737 yards, which is the second highest total ever recorded by a Rock running back in his first five games of a season. He did not play in the Week 2 win at Cheyney due to an injury. The highest five-game rushing total in scoring history is 791 by Lamonte Coleman in the course of his school-record 1,601-yard rushing effort in 1994 ... Sabo's passing yardage total Saturday was 51 yards better than his previous season-best effort of 141 in the Week 2 win at Cheyney ... Goda now has 40 pass receptions for 476 yards this fall.
